How Legend compares

Every AI memory device makes the same basic choice: does it wait for you to press something, or does it capture on its own? That one decision shapes almost everything else, including what the device is good at, what it costs, and what it does with your audio. This page starts there, then compares the devices worth considering.

Details were checked at each maker's own site between 18 and 21 September 2026. Makers change their plans and features, so check before you buy.

Ambient vs press-to-record

Press-to-record devices capture only when you tell them to. Plaud, soundcore Work, SwitchBot's AI MindClip and Pocket all work this way. Ambient (always-on) devices capture continuously. Bee, Omi and Legend work this way.

Which one are you?

Can you tell, in advance, which conversation is going to matter?

If yes, a press-to-record device is probably the better buy. It's cheaper, you get a recording you can go back to, and you decide exactly what's captured.

If no, a cheaper device doesn't help much, because a device you forget to switch on captures nothing. That's the case for ambient capture, and it's the problem Legend was built for. More on why in Why Legend and on our ADHD page.

Three ways devices handle audio

This matters more than most spec sheets let on.

1. The audio is kept. Most recorders store it on the device, in the cloud, or both. That's what makes playback possible.
2. The audio is created, then deleted. Some devices say audio is processed and then removed. It's a promise about what happens after the fact.
3. No audio file is created. Speech becomes text as it's spoken. Legend works this way. There's nothing to delete, and nothing to play back.

What's the difference between ambient and press-to-record?
A press-to-record device captures only when you press a button. An ambient device captures continuously without being triggered. Press-to-record suits planned conversations. Ambient suits the moments you didn't see coming.

Which AI pendant doesn't store audio?
Legend creates no audio file at any point, because it turns speech into text as it's spoken. Bee says it processes audio and then deletes it. Most other devices keep the audio so you can play it back.

Does Legend have transcription minute limits?
No. Legend's membership includes unlimited processing, with no minute meters or paid tiers. Most other devices give you around 300 free minutes a month and charge for more.

Is Legend better than Plaud?
