How much do they cost, really?

The Index 01 is $75, and Pebble says plainly that there is no paid subscription. The one cost to plan for is the ring itself: the battery is sealed and not rechargeable, so after it runs out you replace the ring. Pebble estimates that at up to two years for someone making 10 to 20 recordings a day.

The Stream is $249 in Silver and $299 in Gold at preorder prices, down from listed prices of $299 and $349. Sandbar keeps a free tier: creating notes, controlling music and a weekly amount of dictation are always free. Preorders include three months of the Data Plan, which adds unlimited dictation, voice chat and memory, and it continues at $10 a month after that. Over two years, a Stream owner who keeps the plan spends about $459 on the Silver ring; one who stays on the free tier spends $249. An Index 01 owner spends $75, plus a replacement ring when the battery is done.

How do you capture a thought on each ring?

Both rings sit on your index finger and both are built for whispering. On the Index 01 you press the button and speak; Pebble says it only records while the button is pressed. On the Stream you hold the glass touchpad, whisper, and let go to send, and a silent haptic pulse tells you it landed. Sandbar also uses the touchpad for tap and swipe gestures, including music control, so the phone can stay in your pocket.

The bigger difference is what comes after. The Index 01 is a capture tool. A small language model on your phone decides what each recording should become, such as a note or a reminder, and the open-source Pebble app can route it to places like Notion, Google Tasks, webhooks and MCP tools. The Stream is closer to a voice assistant. Its Inner Voice AI can chat with you about what you said, answer questions from the web on the Data Plan, and its Dictation feature types what you say into any app on iOS and Mac.

What happens to your audio?

With the Index 01, the recording is held in the ring's memory until your phone is in range, then streamed to the Pebble app, converted to text on-device and processed by an on-device language model. No internet connection is needed. Cloud backup is optional. For people who want their voice notes to stay on hardware they own, this is the strongest privacy story in the category.

Sandbar says the Stream's microphone only activates while you hold the touchpad and is designed to capture your own voice, and that data is encrypted at rest and in transit. Stream can save a limited number of interactions offline. How long Sandbar keeps voice audio is not published on its product pages, so check its privacy policy if that matters to you.

Which is easier to live with?

The Index 01 never needs a charger, which removes a daily chore, and it is water resistant to one meter. The Stream needs charging but gives you all-day battery life and a battery that does not run out for good. The Index 01 works on Android; the Stream, for now, is an iPhone product.

Availability favors Pebble right now. Pebble put the Index 01 into mass production on 24 July 2026 with more than 13,000 preorders, and by its 8 September update most had shipped, with a few size and color variants going out in September. New orders ship in one to two months. Sandbar's shop lists the first four Stream batches as sold out and Batch 5 shipping mid-December in limited quantities, U.S. only. Stream preorders are fully refundable and come with a 30-day return policy and one-year warranty.

Which should you buy?

Pick the Pebble Index 01 if you want a cheap, private, low-maintenance way to stop losing ideas, you use Android, or you like the idea of routing notes into your own tools. It does one job and costs less than a pair of decent earbuds.

Pick the Sandbar Stream if you are on iPhone and want more than capture: a whispered conversation with an AI, dictation into any app on your phone and Mac, haptic confirmation and music control. It costs more and the best features sit on the Data Plan, but it does far more with each press.
